New Kindergarten Families
Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and we are here to help make the transition as smooth as possible for your family. Below is important information for families preparing to enroll their child in kindergarten at BSD2.
School Hours
Kindergarten students attend school during regular elementary school hours.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
- Student Arrival: 8:35 a.m.
- Instruction Begins: 8:40 a.m.
- Dismissal: 3:20 p.m.
Tuesday (Early Dismissal)
BSD2 elementary schools have an early dismissal schedule on Tuesdays to provide staff with professional learning and collaboration time.
- Student Arrival: 8:35 a.m.
- Instruction Begins: 8:40 a.m.
- Dismissal for Grades K–5: 2:25 p.m.
Families are encouraged to ensure students arrive on time each day so they are ready to begin learning promptly at 8:40 a.m.
Students should arrive on time each day and be ready to learn. Regular attendance helps children build strong academic and social foundations.

Age Requirement
To enroll in kindergarten, children must be 5 years old (on or before September 1st) in accordance with Illinois requirements.
Kindergarten provides students with a strong foundation in literacy, mathematics, social-emotional learning, and other essential skills that prepare them for future success.
Transport
BSD2 provides bus transportation for students who live 1.5 miles or more from their designated home school.
Eligible students will receive transportation information before the start of the school year. Our transportation department is committed to ensuring students arrive safely to and from school each day.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
All BSD2 students receive free breakfast and lunch each school day.
Healthy meals are available to support student learning and well-being. Families do not need to apply for free meals, as breakfast and lunch are provided to all students at no cost.
Spanish Dual Language Program
BSD2 offers a Spanish Dual Language Program designed to help students become bilingual and biliterate in both English and Spanish.
Students who qualify for the program will be enrolled when they begin kindergarten. Eligibility is determined through a language assessment administered before the start of the school year. Families will receive additional information about the program and assessment process during registration.
